Happy Pride Month, everybody!
Today I want to share a video with you about mythology and the gender binary. Mythology is a hugely important part of literature, and I personally teach a course which discusses mythology a great deal, so of course I am biased, but I just want to start by saying: mythology is fascinating! We can learn so much about humans as a whole when we look at mythology across cultures all around the world. We see similarities in ideas, differences in traditions, and the past and the present coming together when we look at these stories.
When we're talking about gender, people often suggest that concepts such as being non-binary, gender fluid, or transgender are somehow new concepts. But that is just not true! If we look at history and mythology, we can see that these are in fact ancient concepts. In this video from PBS's Storied, Dr. Moiya McTier and Dr. Emily Zarka explore how gender fluidity is actually common in ancient mythology. Enjoy!
